A trip to Lagos, Lisbon to Lagos!

Lagos, a historic port town situated on the beautiful Western Algarve, is a town with a rich seafaring heritage and dramatic natural scenery! In the January 2020, I was lucky enough to have my vacation in Lagos!

Lisbon to Lagos, transportation

Train

From Lisbon, I took the train to Lagos. There are no direct train from Lisbon to Lagos. The travel by train is first take a ride to Tunes, then change a regional train toward Lagos. The train from Lisbon to Lagos and that regional train are well connected, it take a total about 4.5 hours. The total cost is about 23euro.

In my trip, I departed from the Entrecampos station because it is close to my accommodation, but it is also possible to take the train from the Estação do Oriente station. My first train (Lisbon to Tunes) got delayed about 1 hour, the staff just told me that don’t need to be worried as the regional train would always wait for it! It was a bit lucky that after arrived Tunes station, I found the regional train was waiting us in the station!

The train station in Lagos is about 15 minutes walking to the city center.

Bus

There are some bus company running the service between Lisbon and Lagos! The buses usually leave from the Sete Rios in Lisbon. It takes about 4hours for the ride and it is direct. The running bus company includes RENEX, rede expressos and EVA.

What to do in Lagos?

I visited Lagos in January, a low season in here. Honestly say some restaurants were closed for their vacation in my time of visiting. However I quite enjoy the quiet moment in this pretty town as it is not crowded for the sightseeing points (Imagine the beaches are full of people and people queueing for taking photo in some IG famous spot!).

Praia do Camilo

The wooden steps leading to the beach

About 20minutes walking from the city center, it is the Lagos’ iconic beach! The 200 wooden steps will lead you to reach the beach with golden sand and crystal clear, azure water! That rich ochre tones and lacy appearance of the craggy calcarenite cliffs are so impressive! It is a excellent place for enjoying sunbath and getting swimming in summer.

Ponta da Piedade

That golden Ponta da Piedade, a famous scenic spot in Lagos

Taking another 20minutes walking from Praia do Camilo, you can reach this famous scenic spot in Lagos! This headland is one of the finest natural features in Algarve! The Ponta da Piedade is a bleak and windswept headland, where the exposed cliffs reveal their golden colour, forming a amazing scenic spot with the turquoise sea waters!

The Lagos city itself

Don’t forget spending some time exploring this pretty city! Though it is surrounded by a lot of tourist-friendly beaches and rock formations, the city itself is worth spending your time for exploring. At one time, it was the centre of the European slave trade! Once was a high-profile capital of the Algarve, it still remained some historical building in the town!
